San Gimignano

San Gimignano has Etruscan origin and many towns and necropolis were found nearby.

It is mentioned from the year 929 and towards the end of 10cent. the Archbishop Sigeric wrote about San Gimignano being on the Francigena Route between Pisa and Siena.

In the 12cent. became a free city ruled by the Ghibellines and started to be very wealthy because of the many products of agriculture, mainly the Saffron, and because of its large landed properties and trading with Siria and Egypt.

So then San Gimignano became a financial and commercial very powerful town, and with its 72 towers was very well visible from a big distance and was also very impressive for anybody was passing through this valley.

Still today with its 15 towers san Gimignano is really unique.
