Sant'Antimo

S.Antimo Abbey is one of the most important and beautiful Romanesque monastic building of 12century.

As stately as French and Lombard churches and abbeys, it was estabilished, as the Medieval legend says, by Charlemagne in 781(first mentioned in 812).

In Middle-Age the Abbot was one of the most powerful Senese Feudatory and ruled over 38 churches even located in Grosseto, Firenze and Pistoia territories.

In 1202, because of a clashing of interests with Siena, it began to dacay and in 1462 the Pope Pio II put it under Montalcino Diocese.
